One of the Japanese Three – along with Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons – who took Paris by storm in the early 1980s, Miyake was a visionary and a radical who constantly pushed against the fashion norms of the time.

His genderless, unorthodox, sculptural designs helped shape the big shouldered, voluminous look espoused by the style conscious of that decade.But it’s Steve Jobs’ black polo necks he’s most widely remembered for now, although Miyake was already 40 years into a successful career when Jobs revealed the provenance of his signature pullover to Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs, the 2011 biography.

Jobs wanted a personal uniform that would alleviate the irritation of having to choose what to wear every day – an approach Mark Zuckerberg and Elizabeth Holmes would later follow.
