Holidays abroad 'from May 17' - but only 'tiny handful' of countries make list

Holidays abroad will be permitted in just over two weeks, it was claimed tonight - but tourists to most parts of the world will have to quarantine when they return.

A government insider said that Downing Street will announce this week that international breaks are permitted from May 17. Non-essential travel is currently banned under Covid laws brought in to stop the spread of the virus.

A traffic light system is set to be introduced when holidays abroad are allowed again - with a "tiny handful" of countries on the green list - meaning people do not have to isolate when they get back.
