Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez claims he would be an ice cream man instead of the world’s pound-for-pound king if he had listened to his dad.
Alvarez’s father used to have an ice cream business and wanted the Mexican ring legend to follow in his footsteps. He helped out from the age of five until 17 when he had been a pro for two years to concentrate on his blossoming boxing career.
Alvarez, who faces Billy Joe Saunders in a super-middleweight unification clash in Texas in the early hours of Sunday, said: “My father advised me not to start boxing,” he said. “He wanted me to study and to work with him in his store that he used to have selling ice creams. “I helped him a lot when I was younger.
