Heatwave meltdown brings Britain to a halt as UK's hottest day predicted to be 41C

Met Office has issued a red warning across large parts of the country, stretching from York and Manchester to London and the south-east.High temperatures are also forecast in the rest of the UK - with amber warning for all of Wales and parts of Scotland. It comes after the Met Office issued amber and red alerts warning of “potential serious illness or danger to life”.According to reports, the BBC Weather presenter and meteorologist Simon King pointed out that temperatures could reach 42C in the East Midlands on Tuesday – tweeting that this level of heat “just shouldn’t happen”.

Overnight temperatures are warned to be in the mid twenties - before cooling on Wednesday.It is the first time the Met Office has issued a red warning since the system was introduced last year.

Some GP surgeries and operating theatres have already closed as hospital bosses warned that the weather made it hard to keep services running.
