Other officers kept members of the public at bay as Sandown laid motionless on the floor. Tragically, the emergency care it received was not enough to prevent the horse from passing away.
In a tribute to Sandown, the Metropolitan Police Force said that it was one of their most experienced animals and had policed "all types of events" across the capital.
