Give every area town or parish councils to boost community ties, says think tank

Every area should be given the “right to self government” through a parish or town council to boost communities and kickstart economic growth, a report urges today.

Just 25% of England is represented by a parish or town council, compared with 70% of Wales and 100% of Scotland, according to a study by the think tank Onward.

Its report, The Policies of Belonging, says ministers would help to meet their “levelling up” pledge by firing up local democracies.

Backed by charities and a cross-party group of MPs, the study says communities should be given powers to help “secure land for community-led housing to ensure a supply of local affordable or social homes”.
