The British socialite, 58, wiped tears from her eye with several times during the hearing in Manhattan on Tuesday, in which the judge deemed her a "substantial flight risk".
Long-time friend of paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell, who is accused of luring young girls for the disgraced billionaire to abuse, could remain in prison until her trial next July.
She is currently incarcerated in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, the same prison Epstein took his own life - and was appearing in court via video link.
