Gary Neville retired in 2011 as a one-club man - just the way he had always planned. But the Manchester United legend knows things could have turned out differently if Sir Alex Ferguson decided his future lay elsewhere.

And he admits that if he had to look elsewhere in the Premier League, Arsenal would have been top of his list of clubs to pursue.

Despite a fierce rivalry with the Gunners during the height of their powers under Arsene Wenger, Neville has opened up on his soft spot for the history of the club and Wenger’s regime.

Speaking to the Sky Sports Football podcast Off Script, he also revealed admiration for Aston Villa and Newcastle as two more plausible Premier League destinations.
