A cabinet minister wants British workers who are on furlough to work as fruit pickers for the summer to boost worker numbers after coronavirus travel restrictions reduced the number of migrant employees entering the UK.
George Eustice, MP for Redruth and Camborne, has flagged that the number of migrant workers that would normally help the UK harvest fruits and salads is down by two thirds.
The 48-year-old Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has appealed to the millions of Brits currently off work due to furlough to consider undertaking a second job to help make sure the country is able to meet demand for food.
