Special editions, one-off prints and stirring slogans that capture the mood In times of crisis, artists have always been supportive.
Damien Hirst, for example, has given millions of pounds of art to charities. Five works he gave to Sotheby’s for its (Red) sale, organised by Bono in 2008 to fight the Aids epidemic in Africa, raised £8.5 million.
But those boom days are a distant memory; collectors are not splurging cash quite so freely now. Last week, it was posters and prints in more affordable price ranges that stood out in the rally to help the health services.
