The most vulnerable people in the UK will receive food boxes in the biggest effort to deliver supplies to those in need since the Second World War.

Those deemed most vulnerable to coronavirus have started to receive the packages as part of the government’s ‘social shielding,’ with 2,000 already left on people’s doorsteps.

Another 50,000 are expected to go out over the next seven days and officials insist this could be ramped up to hundreds of thousands a week if required.

The parcels, containing tinned goods, toilet roll, cornflakes, fruit, pasta and packets of custard creams are being sent to those who can’t leave their homes and have no nearby support. For live updates throughout the day on the coronavirus pandemic visit our liveblog.
