Liverpool fans have flocked to Twitter to joke that Everton striker Solomon Rondon’s red card on Sunday was a plan orchestrated by Rafa Benitez from his time at Goodison Park. The Toffees lost 3-2 to Brentford at the weekend to add to their relegation woes in a match where victory would have seen them confirm their status as a Premier League club for next season.
With Everton chasing the game, manager Frank Lampard substituted Rondon onto the pitch to provide a presence in the final third. But after just three minutes of the Venezuelan entering the pitch, he was trudging off of it after receiving a straight red card.
The former West Brom forward was sent off for a horrendous two-footed challenge on Rico Henry, who was lucky to avoid serious injury.Rondon was signed by Benitez last year whilst he was at Everton and some Reds supporters have joked that their former manager is close to completing an ‘inside mission’ to relegate the Toffees.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “Solomon Rondon is Rafa Benitez’s last inside agent to send Everton down and get a statue at Anfield.”Another joked: “Rafa Benitez really tried his best to relegate Everton, signing Rondon and playin crud ball.” And another added: “Rondon with one last f*** you on behalf of Rafa Benitez.”Benitez was sacked in January of this season following six-and-a-half months in charge of Everton.
