Hard-up families would be forced to cut back on food for their children if the Tories axe the £20-a-week Universal Credit rise, campaigners warn today.
Some 220,000 households fear they would have to serve-up less for their kids if the benefit hike is scrapped at the end of March as planned, according to research by Britain's biggest foodbank network.
The temporary increase was introduced when the coronavirus crisis began to grip the UK last spring. It costs the Treasury £6billion annually and is worth £1,040-a-year to six million families.
But it is due to be withdrawn next month – despite mounting pressure on Boris Johnson to execute a U-turn and extend the lifeline.
