An extremely rare 12th century coin found just before lockdown has just sold for more than £17,000. The 800-year-old silver “anarchy” penny is unusual because it was struck in the name of a little-known lord rather than the contested monarch at the time, King Stephen.
The anarchy describes a time with multiple monarchs competing for the English throne after the accidental death of the crown prince, seeing law and order break down.
Experts say the coin dates back to 1146-1152 AD and originally valued it at £6,000.But it smashed this target when it was sold to a private collector for triple its initial valuation.
