EastEnders hardman Jake Wood saved the life of an elderly neighbour locked in a shed in sweltering heat. The actor – Albert Square’s Max Branning – was in the middle of recording a podcast when he heard the OAP’s yells of terror during last week’s heatwave.

True to his screen image Jake, 47, sprang into action. He said: “Our neighbour David, a lovely old boy, had trapped and locked himself in the shed.

He was screaming and shouting, so I went round and he’s got a little catch that goes up and down. “Obviously he hasn’t got a handle on the inside.

So he’d been in the shed and it shut and he couldn’t get out. “He looked a bit hot in there. It was a bit warm. “I don’t know how long he’d been banging for.
