A patient on a coronavirus ward has been jailed after deliberately coughing in the face of an NHS nurse. Barry Ellis, 47, claimed he was showing Covid-19 symptoms when he was admitted to Liverpool’s Arrowe Park Hospital.

The Liverpool Echo told how he coughed and blew smoke at NHS staff after being told he couldn’t drink or smoke on the ward. The nurse told how the drunkard – who has 42 convictions for 65 offences – had been “ruse all day”.

Iain Criddle, prosecuting said: "He was told that he must stay on the ward, to protect himself and to protect other people from infection." Liverpool Crown Court heard he headed to a fire door, then started shouting and swearing at the frightened nurse.
