Dozens of horrifying 3ft robber crabs invade family’s campsite hunting for food

giant crabs invaded the site. Around 50 of the hungry crustaceans swarmed the campsite in Christmas Island, Australia hunting for food after reportedly smelling a barbecue which had been cooked up earlier on.

In a horrifying video which has since been uploaded to Instagram, the family can be seen sitting around completely unfazed by the creatures as they pile into the campsite hunting for grub.

The species, known as the coconut crab, are the world's biggest land crustacean and have been known to grow up to three feet in length.Christmas Island has the world's largest population of coconut crabs, which can live to be more than 50 years of age.The Christmas Island tourism group shared the footage to Facebook and wrote: "Robber crabs behaving.
