Horrified docs also prescribed topical antibiotic treatments in case they missed any of the bugs. Normally, the beasts' offspring live in the nostrils of sheep and goats, where they mature before falling to the ground to pupate in the environment, before transforming into parasitic pests.
Sometimes, the parents fly into the eyes of humans, causing a disease called ophthalmomyiasis.Thick spikes on the bodies of the larvae can cause irritation and abrasions on the outer membrane of the eye.This can lead to redness, itchiness, swelling, watering, and a feeling of a foreign body in the eye and - in rare cases - the larvae may burrow their way inside the eyeball, damaging vision.
The 53-year-old Frenchman had been working outside near a sheep farm when he felt something fly into his eye, and complained to docs about itchiness later on.
