Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Water Street in Wigan town centre at around 5.10pm. The man is understood to have climbed onto the roof of a Chinese restaurant.
A cordon was put in place as the emergency dealt with the incident. Police said officers spoke to the man, who later climbed down to safety.
There were no reported injuries. Police said the man, who hasn't been identified, was 'receiving appropriate support' after being checked by paramedics at the scene.
