When Dolly Parton married local Nashville contractor Carl Dean in 1966, they dreamed of a busy household filled with six noisy children. "We'll probably start our family or start trying next summer," the country icon gushed excitedly in 1967. "I'd like to have at least four children.
I'd like to have six if we can afford it and if things go well." They even had names picked out - Carla for a girl - and wondered if their brood would inherit Carl's model looks or Dolly's petite height.
But despite their efforts, by the early eighties Dolly still hadn't fallen pregnant and was also suffering from an agonising undiagnosed gynaecological condition which was causing internal bleeding.
