Deadliest day of UK's coronavirus 'second wave' revealed by fresh analysis

The deadliest day so far in the UK's second wave of coronavirus caused almost 500 deaths, new analysis has found. A total of 494 deaths occurred on Friday, November 18 where Covid-19 was recorded on the person's death certificate.

The deadliest day of the UK's first wave was Wednesday, April 8, when 1,455 people died. Since November 18 the number of deaths per day has fallen slightly, but has remained in the 400s.

The figures have been compiled from provisional data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). They also show that: Of the 78,145 deaths involving Covid-19 that have occurred in the UK from the start of the pandemic up to Friday, December 4, a quarter (19,636, or 25%) have taken place since the start of October.
