Dad branded 'a**hole' for taking niece on holiday instead of daughter

Reddit in the “Am I the A**hole” forum to ask whether he was in the wrong – and, thousands of people weighed in on the matter.He explained that he has a daughter, aged 14, called “Wendy” who lives with his ex-wife a long way away.The dad gets to see his child once a month.But, he also has a 15-year-old niece called “Claire” who lives with him and he has raised her since she was a child as her parents died.He said that he was far closer to Claire than Wendy and that the two did not get along.The dad added: “A while ago I got a bonus at work and I decided to go on a trip but I couldn’t afford to take both girls and also the girls don’t get along (which is mostly Claire's fault I admit).“No one would have fun if I took them both so I had to pick one and since Wendy can go with her mum if she wants I decided that its only fair if I take Claire.”However, when he and his niece returned from the trip he claims Wendy was angry at her dad.She said that he doesn’t take her on holiday and in fact “chooses his niece over her".The father, who remained anonymous, noted: “I’ve raised Claire and I consider her my daughter so I don’t think I did anything wrong.“My ex however is calling me an AH (a**hole) and says that I always favour Claire but thats not true.”The man asked people on the website to offer their opinion on the situation.One person said: "If they're both under your care, you need to treat them as equally as possible.“Should have taken both or taken neither.“Or planned a comparable trip to take your daughter on separately."Get all the biggest Lifestyle news straight to your inbox.
