Coronavirus: British Airways plan to cull 12,000 staff branded 'unlawful' by union boss

Brutal plans by British Airways to slash up to 12,000 workers have been branded “unlawful and immoral” by a union chief. Unite General Secretary Len McCluskey demanded that BA withdraw its threat to axe more than one in four staff.

There is shock and anger at the sudden timing of Tuesday’s announcement, coming on the same day as the funeral of a cabin crew boss who died from coronavirus.

It comes as other BA crew could potentially be putting their health at risk by manning repatriation flights and those bringing in vital PPE equipment for front line workers.

BA owner International Airlines Group blamed a coronavirus slump in air travel for the proposed redundancies, warning it could be “several years” for passenger numbers to recover.
