Community 'gobsmacked' after thieves dismantle bridge

Shameless thieves left a bill of thousands of pounds after dismantling a bridge at a popular beauty spot. The group stole the steel railings from a walkway at Cutacre Country Park, in Over Hulton, Bolton, which has been particularly busy with walkers since the coronavirus lockdown began.

The bridge was installed less than a year ago at a cost of more than £15,000 but has now had to be closed to the public over safety fears.

Bill Mottram works as an ecologist at the park and helps to manage the area. He has called for anyone who might have spotted the thieves to report it to the police. "I was gobsmacked when I find out what had happened," he said. "The bridges are about 10 metres long and the railings are four or five feet high.
