Footballer Chineme Martins has died aged 22 after collapsing on the pitch during a game in the Nigeria Premier League. Martins was playing for Nasarawa United in a top flight game against Katsina United on Sunday when he collapsed.
There were problems with the pitchside ambulance as it attempted to rush him to hospital, with the vehicle failing to start as it attempted to leave the pitch.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has now ordered clubs to check all medical facilities before matches can go ahead in response to the tragedy.
A statement from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) confirmed the tragic passing of the young defender and confirmed he will undergo an autopsy to determine his cause of death.
