Britain 'warned about coronavirus-style pandemic killing 65,000 people last year'

Government officials were warned about the risk of coronavirus last year and were told to stockpile PPE for the NHS, a leaked document has revealed.

A leaked Cabinet Office document seen by The Guardian claimed a pandemic could cost the lives of tens of thousands of Britons - a year before the coronavirus pandemic broke out.

Documents reveal the Government were told to stockpile Personal Protective Equipment and establish contact tracing in a bid to combat a pandemic if need be.

It was told to draw up plans to manage a surge in deaths and advised officials to make plans for helping Brits abroad. One of those who signed off on the 2019 National Security Risk Assessment was Sir Patrick Vallance, the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser
