Boris Johnson’s Moonshot plan for 10 million coronavirus tests a day has been shot to pieces by experts. The Prime Minister has pinned his hopes on saving Christmas with the programme – even though the technology does not yet exist.
A Cambridge University statistician warns the scheme could lead to hundreds of thousands of people being wrongly diagnosed as having Covid-19.
Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter said: “Mass screening always seems a good idea in any disease. But the huge danger is false positives – no tests are perfect. “If you’re going to have a test that would allow someone into a theatre or back to work, you’re going to have to be really sure they’re not infectious.
