Boris Johnson has suffered a humiliating setback after failing to stop his chief Scottish law officer quitting over the UK government’s plan to breach international law.
Lord Keen, the Advocate General for Scotland, tendered his resignation on Wednesday morning after being contradicted over the illegality of Johnson’s controversial Internal Market Bill.Downing Street refused to formally accept the decision for hours as officials made desperate attempts to keep the government's senior Scottish law officer in post.Speaking in front of a Commons committee the Prime Minister told MPs “conversations on that matter are still continuing” on Wednesday afternoon.But by 5.30pm Downing St accepted the inevitable and confirmed Lord Keen had resigned.
