A popular beauty spot has been shut after being overwhelmed with visitors over the weekend. Fairy Glen, near Appley Bridge, in Wigan, was closed to the public from yesterday (May 18) following an 'unprecedented and unsafe volume of visitors', Lancs Live reports.

Bosses at West Lancashire Borough Council said the decision was made in consultation with Lancashire Constabulary to 'protect public health'.

Large numbers of visitors and cars have been reported at the walking destination in recent days. It comes following the relaxation of lockdown restrictions last week with people taking advantage of new rules in England that allow for unlimited travel and unlimited exercise.
