Arsenal head of recruitment Francis Cagigao has been responsible for some shrewd pieces of business over the years. Cagigao has been credited with discovering the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla, Hector Bellerin over the years and, more recently, Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba.
But the nature of the transfer market means his opinion does not always carry top weight. And The Athletic have highlighted two instances where the club reportedly went against his advice in the summer window of 2016.
In search of a striker and centre-back ahead of the new season, the club were led to Spain where Shkodran Mustafi was signed from Valencia as well as Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna.
