Since they were first discovered in India in the 4th century BC, diamonds have been treasured by kings and queens, revered for their near-unbreakable strength and dazzling brilliance.
The world's finest diamonds are believed to originate from India's now-exhausted Golconda mine, and many myths and legends abound about famous Golconda stones.
In the late 1800s, diamonds were also discovered in South Africa, making them more widely available for the first time, and sparking the trend for precious diamond jewellery that continues today.
