Backstage after Stella McCartney’s show at Paris Fashion Week on Monday, the designer posed for photographs with ‘models’ wearing fuzzy animal mascot suits.

They’d walked in the catwalk finale - think Tony the Tiger, but swap his signature bandana scarf for a handbag. There was a crocodile carrying a crocodile bag, a rabbit swinging a shearling one - Stella’s latest, all animal-product-free of course, as she famously doesn’t use the real stuff.

Cute-and-fuzzies aside, there was a strength and toughness to McCartney’s autumn/winter 2020 collection. Boots were lug soled - appealing as the rain continues to fall in Paris - or sharply pointed and zip-fronted “goth boots”.
