Then, five days after the end of the royal mourning period, the newly widowed 95-year-old defied claims she would step down as monarch by hosting two virtual royal engagements.
Now, royal experts believe her decision to carry on, even during this time of immense grief, is proof she has no plans to relinquish the throne and will serve until her dying day.
