Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) seem to have sprung out of nowhere over the last couple of years, and now are being used by major artists like Beeple and Trevor Jones to protect their work online.
They have become a big deal and represent even bigger money: earlier this year leading NFT artist Beeple, real name Mike Winklemann, sold a piece for over £51 million.
A bit like collecting and trading football cards, they have generated over £4.6 billion in sales since 2017. The NFT world has seen all kinds of assets bought and sold.In May the original video of Charlie Bit My Finger sold for £500,000 and, at the time of writing, Warner Brothers are selling 100,000 digital avatars of characters from the upcoming release of the film The Matrix.
