There was outrage over 'unbelievable' traffic in a Greater Manchester town. Pictures taken on Tuesday evening (January 21) showed motorists completely gridlocked along Rectory Lane in Standish.

It is thought the traffic was backed up due to ongoing works and temporary traffic lights on nearby School Lane (A5209), at the junction with Quaker's Place.

In a local social media group, the traffic was described as a 'joke' and 'outrageous'. Electricity North West are carrying out the works, which are expected to be completed by Friday (January 24). "It’s absolutely outrageous!!" one person wrote, as another commented: "Cars constantly going through red lights, it was a scary walk home with kids." "Unbelievable.

Took me 55 minutes to do a journey that usually takes 20," posted another, with a fourth motorist commenting: "Like always. Will Get a lot worse before it goes better" and "Just been in it, what a joke." Wigan Council announced that 'emergency works' were being undertaken by Electricity North West on School Lane, which also experienced traffic issues due to the temporary lights in place.
