Police update after car fire in quiet Greater Manchester street

Police have confirmed that an incident involving a car on fire is now being treated as an arson attack. Emergency services were called to Beechwood Crescent in Astley, Wigan, in the early hours of Thursday.

The alarm was raised at 1.50am by residents on the quiet street. Later crime scene investigators were seen gathering evidence from the scene.

A brown Peugeot 5008 car appeared to be the focus of their investigations. The car appeared to have a smashed window. Confirming that detectives are now treating the incident as arson, GMP said in a statement: "On Thursday 6 February 2025 shortly after 1.30am, we were called to reports of a car on fire on Beechwood Crescent in Tyldesley.

GMFRS attended and the fire was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries to report. Enquiries are ongoing." A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just before 1.50am on Thursday (February 6) one fire engine from Atherton fire station attended a car on fire on Beechwood Crescent, Astley.
