Following months of fierce debates, Oldham council has voted to withdraw from a ‘controversial’ housing scheme at an extraordinary meeting.

The meeting, held last night (February 12), saw councillors vote on whether to write to the Secretary of State to have Oldham removed from Places for Everyone (PfE).

PfE, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) housing blueprint spearheaded by Mayor Andy Burnham, aims to bring 170,000 new homes to the region across nine Greater Manchester boroughs, including 11,500 in Oldham.

The plans are supposed to use a ‘brownfield-first’ approach to help fight the housing crisis. But the scheme has long sparked resistance by campaigns run by opposition groups over their inclusion of greenbelt land - part of which will be heard in the High Court for a judicial review.
