You can blame the Vikings for Saddleworth's identity crisis. Despite it being west of the Pennine watershed, the Scandinavians placed it firmly in White Rose country.
It wasn't until a thousand years later, this anomaly was ironed out when administrative boundaries were redrawn under the 1972 Local Government Act.
Then the ancient Saddleworth parish, part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, became part of the new Greater Manchester administrative county, much to the dismay of its residents.
The thing is Saddleworth never left Yorkshire, nor did Yorkshire leave Saddleworth. I feel like a broken record but until people stop perpetuating this myth I'll continue playing.
