West Ham are to appeal against defender Fabian Balbuena's "rank, rotten" red card in their defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. The centre-back was dismissed after referee Chris Kavanagh decided he committed an act of serious foul play - only for the decision to be widely condemned.
Balbuena caught Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell after clearing the ball down the line late in the second half of his club's 1-0 home defeat.
Kavanagh was advised to check the monitor by the VAR official, despite the fact Balbuena had only caught Chilwell in his follow through.
West Ham boss David Moyes was left stunned when the straight red card was shown with the Scot scathing in his belief that it demonstrated a lack of knowledge from those making the decisions. "
