Boris Johnson made the initial announcement and as a result, had remained there for several weeks, leaving Blake in London. An unconventional proposal over the phone, romantic as it was, served as yet another reminder that these were unprecedented times.
The reminders kept coming, too: there would be no post-engagement party, no celebratory visits to family. Blake wasn’t even able to buy a ring as the shops remained firmly closed.
The situation was far from anything we had envisioned. Amid the chaos of adjusting to an insular life of social distancing and no contact with loved ones, we were often surprised that people asked us about wedding plans now we were engaged.
