We’re all still digesting the recent news that Warner Bros. is going to be putting all of their 2021 slate on HBO Max, as well as in theaters. It’s a massive shift for tentpole releases, obviously. Moreover, we learned that the filmmakers and producers of the WB movies were largely in the dark about it, too, which was surprising. Now, at least one film is hoping to be the exception to that rule, and it’s Denis Villenueve’s impending Dune remake. WarnerMedia will be closing its Hong Kong theatrical office with films from Warner Bros to be released by Universal Pictures in the market from January 1, Deadline has confirmed. Layoffs are expected in Hong Kong, though an exact number is not yet clear.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced theatrical release dates for three big event movies tonight — and their intention is that they’re going straight to the big screen, not HBO Max and theaters. Those three are the George Miller Max Max prequel Furiosa on June 23, 2023, Dave Green’s animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme on July 21, 2023 and The Color Purple musical feature on Dec. 20, 2023.  The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, and the intent is to launch the trio as global theatrical releases (not timed with a simultaneous HBO drop; which is the intent for their 2021 theatrical release).

When the news that HBO Max was going to be the day-and-date home for all of Warner Bros.’ major 2021 releases, including the highly-anticipated “Dune,” the industry was shaken. And it didn’t take long at all for Legendary, the co-financiers and co-producers of “Dune,” to come forward with a legal challenge.
