Prince William followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather tonight as he addressed the nation and paid tribute to veterans on VJ Day.
75 years ago on August 15, 1945, King George VI gave a speech to the nation marking the end of the Second World War. Tonight the Duke of Cambridge spoke of his great grandfather’s speech and how “the most catastrophic conflict in mankind’s history came to an end”.
The pre-recorded tribute was shown on BBC One’sVJ Day 75: The Nation’s Tribute. Thousands watched King George VI and the Queen drive down The Mall in an open carriage, as they celebrated the end of the war following Imperial Japan's surrender.
