Top Gun star, 60, was forced to undergo a tracheotomy after battling cancer for the last four years – with Val initially wanting to try and battle the condition without the help of medical professionals.

His daughter Mercedes, who he shares with ex-wife Joanne Whalley, opened up about her dad’s health and recalled the ‘devastating’ moment Val eventually was diagnosed for the first time with stage four cancer, after collapsing at his LA home when the tumour burst in 2015.Until then, he hadn’t been formally diagnosed and Mercedes – who appears alongside Val in new release Paydirt – said she didn’t think her dad would survive long after his diagnosis, as the cancer was so advanced.
