Winds of around 80mph are set to batter the UK and send loose roof tiles flying around like missiles as the Met Office warns Brits to batten down the hatches.

The organisation went as far as to issue a yellow "danger to life warning", with troublesome rain hitting some areas on Tuesday and gnarly winds set to follow on Wednesday.

Millions of people in Wales, the North West, North East and Yorkshire in England, as well as all of Scotland, are especially at risk, with power cuts also looming.READ MORE: UK set for first White Christmas in 12 years according to first long range forecastsNorthern Ireland is also set to be hit by the strong winds, with the yellow warning set to come into force for all of Wednesday. The yellow wind warning dictates there is a "small chance" people will be injured by flying debris, like roof tiles and "large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties".The Met Office said: "There is a chance of a deep low pressure system bringing gusts of 70 to 80 mph to northern parts of the UK on Wednesday."Should this develop disruption would be expected.

However, the most likely scenario is for gusts of 55 to 65 mph within parts of the warning area, most likely the northern Irish Sea and parts of eastern Scotland, bringing some more localised impacts."In addition, heavy rain may prove an additional hazard across north-western areas."Power cuts could also occur, with mobile phone coverage at risk of failing for some.To stay up to date with all the latest news, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters here .A separate yellow warning is in place across western Scotland on Tuesday for heavy rain with spray and flooding set to make nightmare journeys for.
