As the smoke billows out and over the neighbouring gardens, and the heat shimmers up into the atmosphere, you may find yourself asking that very question.

A study led by the University of Manchester calculated that a typical summer barbecue for four people releases more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than an 80-mile car journey.But don’t panic, grill lovers.

It turns out that most of that impact isn’t the fuel – it’s the beef, steaks and burgers we love to sizzle. Red meat is responsible for four times the greenhouse gas emissions of chicken and more than 10 times that of vegetables, so switching to plants, fish and white meat will go a long way to keeping our favourite summer feast planet-friendly.Opting for sustainable British charcoal does play a part, though.
