—Amanda Brooks, Less than three weeks before I ran the 2019 New York City marathon in November, I took my beloved sneakers in for a checkup at my local Super Runners shop.
I'd been experiencing a bit of calf pain, and I wanted to be sure that my sneakers were in tip-top shape before the race. Imagine my absolute horror when the man who'd fit me for them said, "Running a marathon in these is like running a marathon in a pair of Keds."Anyone who's run a race will tell you it's a terrible idea to replace your shoes less than a month out.
But I had no choice. The sneakers were shot—no cushion, threadbare laces, flattened soles. "Don't panic," the salesman told me.
