He did so at the British Games Meeting held at the White City Stadium in London.The following year at the Melbourne Olympics he narrowly missed out on gold after being passed on the final straight.
It was in 1958 when he enjoyed his best season, claiming the European title and becoming the fastest Englishman over 880 yards with a personal best time of 1:47.0.Six weeks before the Rome 1960 Olympics, Hewson suffered a calf injury which hampered his Games.
He led much of his 800 metres heat but ultimately finished fourth, which meant he was knocked out.Following his disappointment in Italy, the tailor retired from athletics and ended up setting up his own company.
