Talks to restore free TV licences for over-75s a 'waste of time' fumes pensioner

Campaigners bidding to restore over-75s' free TV licences tonight said a crunch meeting with BBC bosses was “a waste of time”.

Over-75s have to fork out for watching television after the Conservatives broke an election manifesto pledge to maintain free licences until 2022.

The Silver Voices group hoped to persuade corporation director-general Tim Davie to thrash out a solution with the Government to spare pensioners the annual £157.50 fee.

Rebel OAPs' leader Dennis Reed also urged Mr Davie to consider either a voluntary payment scheme or grading contributions by age, with the very old paying less than those aged 75.
