Todd Gilchrist editor It’s impossible to overstate the impact of De La Soul on hip-hop music and its culture — but for decades, their groundbreaking early albums were not widely available, due to a morass of legal complications that kept them out of circulation, and, crucially, off of streaming services. But today, the shackles are off, the samples are cleared (or worked around) and the albums, most notably their galvanizing platinum 1989 debut “3 Feet High and Rising,” can be streamed legally. The group had the great misfortune of being a precedent for now-common sampling laws, and the dense thicket of samples on their albums, and other associated legal dramas, kept their music out of mainstream circulation for many years. But as part of its acquisition of the Tommy Boy Records catalog, New York-based Reservoir Media has resolved the litigious quagmire that surrounded the group’s first six albums, allowing the group to distribute them on streaming platforms (and vinyl) via Chrysalis Records.

Zack Sharf It stands with good reason that if any scene made you cry in “Top Gun: Maverick,” it was the emotional reunion between Tom Cruise’s Maverick and Val Kilmer’s Iceman. Kilmer had not acted in years after losing the ability to speak due to undergoing throat cancer treatment in 2014. But the actor returned for an emotional scene in the blockbuster “Top Gun” sequel. Suffice to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Kilmer had his big screen reunion with Tom Cruise, 36 years after the original “Top Gun.” The moment was so powerful that not even Cruise could keep the tears in. “I just want to say that was pretty emotional. I’ve known Val for decades,” Cruise said during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “For him to come back and play that character…he’s such a powerful actor, that he instantly became that character again…you’re looking at Iceman.”

Zack Sharf HBO’s “The Last of Us” is one of the biggest shows of 2023 so far, so big that Sony Pictures Entertainment film chairman Tom Rothman is wishing the studio had gone ahead and turned the video game into a feature film. “The Last of Us” is based on the Sony Playstation game of the same name. “Yes,” Rothman answered when asked by Business Insider if he wishes “The Last of Us” was a Sony movie. “But I’m very happy for them and I think it’s better suited episodically. I’m jealous in the best way.” “The Last of Us,” starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, centers on survivors of a pandemic in a world where brain-eating fungus has decimated the human population. The show has been a ratings powerhouse for HBO, garnering over 7 million viewers in one night as of its fourth episode airing.

Tom Holland will be reprising his Spider-Man role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige says they are already working on his comeback.

Just days before getting ready to unveil the first movie in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased new details about what's to come.Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be the first Phase 5 movie, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023), The Marvels (July 28, 2023), Captain America: New World Order (May 3, 2024), Thunderbolts (July 26, 2024) and Blade (September 6, 2024).The 49-year-old Feige - who was somehow nearly fired by Marvel Entertainment head Ike Perlmutter in 2015 - discussed all of those projects and even more with Phase 5 projects like Deadpool 3 (November 8, 2024) and Fantastic Four (February 14, 2025)  in a wide-ranging interview with Entertainment Weekly.He also discussed the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4 - a joint production between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios - with Tom Holland returning after the events of the 2021 blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home.While it's unclear who is actually writing that Spider-Man sequel at this time, apparently the writers are already hard at work.

Tom Holland will be returning as Peter Parker for a fourth Spider-Man movie and the head of Marvel Studios has confirmed that the film is currently in the works.

Zack Sharf Fans of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man are getting good news from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who confirmed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” movie is now being written. Marvel had one of its biggest hits ever with Holland’s third-outing, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which became the first pandemic release to gross over $1 billion worldwide. “All I will say is that we have the story,” Feige said about Holland’s anticipated “Spider-Man” return. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.” Whether Holland will once again team up with “Spider-Man” actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield remains to be seen. Both actors have expressed interest in returning for a new “Spider-Man” movie.

Zack Sharf Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise reunited at this year’s Oscar nominees luncheon, where the blockbuster filmmaker praised his “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds” actor for saving the theatrical movie business with “Top Gun: Maverick.” Both Spielberg and Cruise are in the running for best picture this year thanks to “The Fabelmans” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” respectively. “You saved Hollywood’s ass and you might have saved theatrical distribution,” Spielberg said to Cruise in a video originally shared on Instagram by director Kartiki Gonsalves, whose film “Who Can Say No to Baby Elephants!” is nominated for best documentary short film. Cruise was left blushing.
