Steve Albini, a leading light of indie-rock’s sound and morality as frontman of Big Black and Shellac and recording engineer for Nirvana, PJ Harvey and many other artists, has died at the age 61. The news was confirmed to Variety on Wednesday by Taylor Hales, who works at Albini’s Chicago recording studio, Electronic Audio.

Calvin Harris has hit out at people who criticised his Ultra Music set, which was described as “underwhelming”.The Scottish DJ replied in the comments of a now-deleted post from dance music magazine Dancing Astro, where some users reportedly took issue with Harris’ set.In response, Harris wrote: “You expect me to play none of my songs? how deep is your love – billion streams, this is what u came for – billion streams, my way – billion streams, slide – billion streams, feels – billion streams, one kiss – billion streams, and the other 5 half a bil, and before 2014 another 20, and not cheesy shit, proper fucking songs with real artists.”He went on to point out the many new and unreleased edits of his songs that he did play, accusing the commenters of wishing he’d play “‘FE!N’ trap edits” instead (‘FE!N’ is a Travis Scott/Playboi Carti song).“And you wonder why I never play edm festivals,” Harris continued. “At least people I saw irl had a great time and I can be happy with that, but fuck at this point whatever I do is gonna piss you off.”This summer, Harris is due to play a headline DJ set at TRMSMT Festival 2024 in Glasgow, joining Liam Gallagher and Gerry Cinnamon.

Ninja Tune CEO steps back from role amidst internal investigation
Ninja Tune CEO Adrian Kemp has stepped away from his role pending an internal investigation into allegations against him.The London-based independent record label, founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More, is currently home to acts such as Young Fathers, Black Country, New Road, Kae Tempest and Bonobo.In a statement sent to staff (via Resident Advisor), Ninja Tune confirmed that Kemp would be taking a “step back” while an “independent third-party HR” company investigated the claims.He’ll temporarily depart the CEO role to not “prejudice this investigation in any way”, a letter from his solicitors read (via Mixmag).The details of the allegations are not known currently, but the document stated that Kemp “vehemently denies” the claims.Samantha Sissons, Ninja Tune’s Head Of Marketing, will step up to his role alongside the label’s Head Of Marketing Operations, Tess Kendall.“The outcome of the investigation will be made available upon completion subject to any legal barriers,” according to the statement to staff. “Adrian will continue to work in support of Sam and Tess but with a lower profile.”Kemp has worked at Ninja Tune for over 20 years and became CEO in 2017, per Companies House.Founded in 1990, Ninja Tune is one of dance music’s most successful independent labels.
